Aims and Objectives | The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Tourism Management equips students with the necessary academic, operational and professional knowledge and skills to help them perform competently in various tourism industry contexts.
The primary objectives of the programme are to:
• develop graduates who can contribute to the operations and management of a tourism, convention and event, hospitality and /or related service business or organisation in an efficient, effective, and sustainable way;
• offer a multi-disciplinary education, which equips students with the professional knowledge and skills for a broad range of complex, managerial and specialised work activities in the tourism, convention and event, and hotel industry; and
• develop graduates who can significantly contribute to the total quality service delivery to tourism, convention and event, and hospitality and service-related customers. |
Features | The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Tourism Management is a conversion programme tailor-made to enable graduates of the Higher Diploma in Tourism Management or Higher Diploma in Hotel Management offered by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, Associate Degree in Hospitality, Leisure Management or related fields, to upgrade their qualifications to degree status. This multidisciplinary programme prepares students for careers at the management level in the tourism and hospitality industry, either locally or internationally.
This programme is offered by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of PolyU, and is administered by PolyU SPEED. Most of the classes will be held on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus.
Upon successful completion of the programme, the degree will be awarded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Programme Structure |
In the first year, students mainly study the General University Requirements (GUR), which includes the Cluster Area Requirement (CAR), Language and Communication Requirement (LCR) and Service-Learning subjects. They then proceed to the Discipline-specific Requirement (DSR), which includes Common Subjects, Specialist Subjects and Bridging Subjects, if required.
In the second year, students choose one of the 2 areas in the Career Track option: Private Sector or Public Sector. Finally, they must select either the Honours Thesis option or the Capstone Project option.

Study schedule | Most of the Discipline-specific classes will be held during daytime while some of the CAR and LCR subjects may be arranged in the evening or weekends.
No classes for Discipline-specific subject are offered in the summer semester for this programme. |
Teaching and Assessment Methods | Teaching is usually conducted in the form of lectures, tutorials, and seminars. Some classes may be supplemented by laboratory and/or practical sessions.
Academic progress will be assessed by methods that include fieldwork, laboratory assignments, projects, tests and/or examinations.
Examinations are normally held in December and April/May of every year, after the teaching semesters. |
Entry Requirements |
- A Higher Diploma in Hotel, Tourism or MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) with good-to-merit GPA level; OR
- An Associate Degree in Hotel, Tourism, or Convention and Event Management or in Business (with a focus on Hospitality or Tourism) with good-to-merit GPA level; OR
- Equivalent qualifications from institutions in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland or abroad.
PLUS
- A minimum of 10 weeks or equivalent to 400 hours of accumulated part-time or full-time work experience in the hospitality, tourism, MICE or a related industry.
[Note: the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement undertaken for the SHTM's Higher Diploma in Hotel Management or Higher Diploma in Tourism Management is deemed adequate to fulfill this requirement.]

Supporting Facilities | Most of the classes of the PolyU award programmes offered through PolyU SPEED will be held on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus.
Both PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus are equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities that offer a vigorous environment for all-round student development.
Students will have access to libraries, computing and sports facilities on the PolyU main campus as well as the two campuses in Hung Hom Bay and West Kowloon. To facilitate students’ travelling among the campuses, shuttle bus services connecting the three campuses are provided. Full-time students will also be eligible for health services. |
