Aims and ObjectivesThe Scheme is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and competencies to become a professional in the relevant sector.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Scheme in Applied Sciences, comprising three programmes namely:
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Health Studies)
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Information Systems and Web Technologies)
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Statistics and Data Science)
  • FeaturesThe subjects of this Scheme will be delivered by qualified academic staff.

    In the Health Studies programme, the teaching team includes experienced medical and healthcare professionals. During the course, students are encouraged to participate in field experience and scholarly activities. Among the graduates in 2016 and 2017, a number have proceeded to postgraduate studies in Master’s programmes at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in infection control, health informatics, public health, nutrition and food science, and sports medicine and sport science. A graduate had been admitted to undergraduate pharmacy study at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Job offers included marketing in health professional education, administration in the Hospital Authority, private medical groups and private hospitals, enrolled nurse training at public and private hospitals, Government ambulance, fire and immigration services, quality control and sales in pharmaceutical companies, sales in health device companies, insurance, NGO community projects, etc.

    The Information Systems and Web Technologies programme is taught by faulty members of PolyU SPEED and qualified professionals. For the Web Technologies part, students will learn the necessary knowledge and skills for developing websites at the front-end and supporting programs and database at the back-end. Students will also learn about multimedia technology for the internet and how to design and implement e-commerce strategies. For the Information Systems part, students will acquire knowledge on Management Information Systems, Enterprise Cloud Computing, and Computer Security. Electives include Mobile Application Development, Foundations of Animation and Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Graduates from the programme can work as website developers, IT support, network administrator and database support.

    For the Statistics and Data Science programme, our teaching team includes professionals in the fields of mathematics, statistics, computer science and business. During the course, students will learn a range of data management tools and statistical software, including SAS, R, SPSS, Microsoft Excel (VBA) and SQL Server. In addition, students are encouraged to take professional examinations (e.g. SAS Global Certification program) and exam preparation workshops (by experienced instructors) are arranged biannually. Graduates can work as customer data analyst, statistical analyst, data science business analyst, data strategy and analytics officer, research officer, researcher, digital analyst, statistical officer, data scientist and statistician.

    Professional RecognitionStudents of all the three programmes of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences can join the Hong Kong College of Community Health Practitioners (HKCCHP) as student members, and, upon graduation, can advance to the Associate Fellowship (AFHKCCHP) status.

    Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Health Studies):
    Students of the programme are eligible to apply as Associate Members of the Hong Kong College of Health Service Executives (HKCHSE), as Student Members of Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Association (HKOSHA), and as Affiliated Members of Hong Kong Institute of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (HKIOEH).

    Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Information Systems and Web Technologies):
    Students of the programme are eligible to apply for student membership with the ISACA (Previously known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association)and Hong Kong Computer Society.

    Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Sciences (Statistics and Data Science):
    Students of the programme are eligible for exemption from Modules 1, 2 and 3 of the Hong Kong Statistical Society's Graduate Diploma if they have completed the required specific subjects with satisfactory results.
