On 2 September 2017, College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE), an affiliate of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), welcomed the new full-time students joining its educational units, Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) and School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED).  These students are enrolled on the PolyU-HKCC award associate degree (AD) and higher diploma (HD) programmes, and the PolyU-SPEED award top-up honours degree programmes.

Officiating at the ceremony, Prof. Philip C.H. Chan, PolyU Deputy President and Provost cum CPCE Council Vice Chairman, remarked that PolyU established CPCE in 2002 to provide additional opportunities for learners to pursue higher education. The sub-degree programmes leading to PolyU-HKCC awards, as well as the top-up honours degree programmes leading to PolyU-SPEED awards, serve to offer learners an alternative pathway to pursue tertiary education in a flexible and structured manner.

Prof. Chan encouraged students to strive for whole-person development during their studies in CPCE, “Apart from developing the professional competency of students, CPCE attaches the same importance to all-round capabilities as PolyU does.  Through the joint effort of CPCE Student Affairs Office, HKCC and SPEED, students will be given abundant out-of-classroom learning opportunities to develop themselves as critical thinkers, effective communicators, innovative problem solvers, lifelong learners and ethical leaders.”

New Programmes to Meet Community Needs

Three new PolyU-SPEED award programmes have admitted their first cohort of students in this academic year.  Within SPEED’s existing BA (Hons) Scheme in Business, the new BA (Hons) in Business (Health Services Management) will provide an additional articulation pathway for sub-degree graduates in business management and healthcare disciplines.  In addition, the BSc (Hons) in Engineering and Management and the BSc (Hons) in Surveying, upon transfer from PolyU Department of Building and Real Estate to SPEED, will continue to nurture students as professionals in the building and surveying sectors.

HKCC currently offers more than 30 sub-degree programmes spanning the domains of arts, science, social sciences, business, and the specialised areas of health studies and design.  As for SPEED, it provides more than 20 top-up honours degree programmes leading to PolyU-SPEED awards, which match closely the articulation needs of HKCC graduates in related disciplines.  In coming years, SPEED will further enhance its programme portfolio to offer diversified articulation pathways.

CPCE Dean Prof. Peter Yuen shares with the freshmen the satisfactory results achieved by CPCE in the Student Barometer (SB) exercise, a global survey of students’ experience.

Survey Results Bear Testimony to CPCE’s Quality Teaching

Prof. Peter Yuen, Dean of CPCE, shared with the freshmen the satisfactory results achieved by CPCE in the Student Barometer (SB) exercise, a global survey of students’ experience.  “To obtain feedback from students, CPCE participated in the SB exercise for the second year in a row.  In 2016, CPCE received an encouraging overall student satisfaction rate of 89%, which was in line with the global benchmark and higher than the local benchmark.  In the survey among local students of the participating government-funded universities and self-financing tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, CPCE was ranked first for the second year in almost all of the teaching elements assessed in the survey, which included quality of lectures, learning support, good teachers, programme organisation and content, as well as marking criteria and assessment. The SB survey results serve as a fine testament to CPCE’s efforts in providing quality higher education.”

Prof. Yuen also shared with the audience the impressive employment and articulation figures of graduates. “HKCC Graduate Survey 2016 indicated that a total of 2,207 graduates were admitted to undergraduate degree programmes, representing a record high articulation rate of 89.3%.  Among these articulated graduates, 1,249 (56.6%) were admitted to publicly-funded bachelor’s degree programmes, including 1,010 (45.8%) to the Senior Year places.  In terms of employment, SPEED 2016 Graduate Employment Survey results showed that 90.7% of graduates of full-time programmes were in employment within six months after graduation.  In addition, 4.4% of the graduates were engaged in further studies on a full-time basis. With faculty members’ commitment and students’ effort, I am confident that the learning journeys at CPCE will be rewarding and meaningful,” said Prof. Yuen.
