Dr Connie Mak obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (with first class honours) from The University of Hong Kong, with scholarships offered by the InterCham Scholarship Fund, The Providence Foundation and The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. After serving the MTR Corporation as a management trainee in marketing, she pursued her postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford and obtained her MSc in Management Research and MLitt in Management Studies, both with full scholarships from the Swire/Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Besides, she received her PhD Degree in Management from the University of Leicester in the UK, exploring consumption, cultural capital, impression management and career identity in the workplace.
Since 2004, Connie has been teaching marketing, business, event management and research programmes at various institutions in Hong Kong before joining CPCE, PolyU in 2011, including the City University of Hong Kong, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) and HKU SPACE (as Adjunct Lecturer). Her teaching also involved degree programmes of overseas universities, including Edinburgh Napier University, Macquarie University and Curtin University, where she also supervised honours dissertations. During her tenure at OUHK, Connie was the course developer and consultant of the DBA degree, in which she also taught the respective methodology subjects and supervised research projects in both English and Mandarin for 8 years since the inception of the programme in 2004.
Connie’s research interests lie in the areas of consumer culture, symbolic consumption, tourism and events, cultural capital, self-identity, impression management, brand management and strategic marketing in various contexts.
Connie has also served a few listed corporations as a marketing manager, responsible for formulating marketing strategies and managing a number of award-winning marketing and advertising campaigns. She has also been interviewed by the media such as Ming Pao on entrepreneurship.
