Sylvia Lin received her MA in Linguistics and MPhil in Applied English Linguistics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is currently a PhD candidate in English at the City University of Hong Kong, where she has been awarded the Research Tuition Scholarship and the Outstanding Academic Performance Award.

Her research interests include English for academic purposes, critical thinking, discourse analysis, and second language acquisition. At present, she is examining how students exercise and develop critical thinking in the disciplinary research and writing process. She has published journal articles and presented at conferences in the fields of critical thinking, second language acquisition, and L2 motivational studies.

Sylvia has been teaching Hong Kong tertiary students of different proficiency levels. Prior to joining PolyU SPEED, she taught courses such as University English and English for Business Communication to undergraduate students at the City University of Hong Kong for three years.
