Bad Weather Arrangements

1.Applicable to ALL online and face-to-face on-campus classes and examinations
2.Announcements made by the Education Bureau on cancellation/postponement of classesexaminations are not applicable to SPEED

 

 

A. Tropical Cyclone Warning

 

Signal No. 1 or 3

Classes/examinations will be held as scheduled.


Signal No. 8 or above

 

Arrangements for Classes NOT YET STARTED
When the Hong Kong Observatory announces during the time/period specified that Signal No. 8 or above is likely to be hoisted within the next two hours OR when the Signal is hoisted during the period OR an ‘extreme condition’ announcement issued by the Government is in force:Between 6:30 am and 12:00 noonAll classes* starting before 2:00 pm will be cancelled.
Between 12:00 noon and 4:30 pmAll classes* starting at any time from 12:00 noon and before 6:30 pm will be cancelled.
From 4:30 pmAll classes* starting from 4:30 pm onward will be cancelled.
When the Hong Kong Observatory announces during the time/period specified that Signal No. 8 or above is lowered OR ‘extreme condition’ is cancelled by the Government:Before or at 12:00 noon All classes starting from 2:00 pm will be held as scheduled. 
Before or at 4:30 pmAll classes starting from 6:30 pm will be held as scheduled.
Arrangements for Classes ALREADY STARTED
Lecturers shall release students attending classes to go home as soon as possible.
Arrangements for Examinations#
Signal No. 8 or above is likely to be hoisted OR when the Signal is hoisted OR ‘extreme condition’ issued by the Government is in force: Within two hours from the start of a scheduled examination^Examination will be postponed to another day.
During an examinationExamination will continue unless otherwise announced by SPEED.
Signal No. 8 is lowered OR ‘extreme condition’ is cancelled by the Government: Two hours before an examination starts^Examination will be held as scheduled unless otherwise announced by SPEED.
Arrangements for Make-up Classes/Revised Examination Schedule
The SPEED office will contact students concerned on revised class/examination arrangements within five working days after the warning has been lowered/cancelled.

If a Lecture is followed immediately by a Tutorial, it will be regarded as two different class sessions.  
(For example, if the Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 is lowered after 6:30 am and before 12:00 noon, the Lecture starting at 1:00 pm will be cancelled while the Tutorial starting at 2:00 pm will be held as scheduled.)

The arrangements for examinations are also applicable to the examination script viewing sessions.

For oral examination, starting time refers to the commencement of the whole session (e.g. Morning Session – 9:00 am to 12:00 noon or Afternoon Session – 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm) of the oral examination for a subject instead of the examination timeslot of an individual student.


B. Rainstorm Warning

 

Amber Warning

Classes/examinations will be held as scheduled.


Red Warning

Classes/examinations will be held as scheduled unless otherwise announced by SPEED.


Black Warning 

 

Arrangements for Classes NOT YET STARTED
Warning is issuedBetween 6:30 am and 12:00 noonAll classes* starting before 2:00 pm will be cancelled.
Between 12:00 noon and 4:30 pmAll classes* starting at any time from 12:00 noon and before 6:30 pm will be cancelled.
From 4:30 pmAll classes* starting from 4:30 pm onward will be cancelled.
Warning is cancelledBefore or at 12:00 noon All classes scheduled at or after 2:00 pm will be held as scheduled unless otherwise announced by SPEED. 
Before or at 4:30 pm All classes starting at or after 6:30 pm will be held as scheduled unless otherwise announced by SPEED. 
Arrangements for Examinations# NOT YET STARTED
Warning issued within two hours from the start of a scheduled examination^Examination will be postponed to another day.
Warning cancelled two hours before an examination starts^

Examination will be held as scheduled unless otherwise announced by SPEED.

For Classes and Examinations# ALREADY STARTED
  • If the Black Rainstorm Warning is issued during office hours or in the evenings when classes/examinations are already in progress, all classes/examinations will continue unless otherwise announced by SPEED. This is in line with Government advice that people should take shelter in a safe place during a Black Rainstorm Warning.
  • If the warning is still in force when classes/examinations end, you are advised to stay on campus for your own safety until the warning has been cancelled or the traffic conditions have improved. Air-conditioning will be maintained whenever practicable while the warning is prevailing.
  • If you need help, please contact the Campus Facilities Management Office at 3746-0999 (PolyU West Kowloon Campus)/ 3746-0666 (PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus) or the Campus Security Control Centre at 2766-7666 (PolyU Main Campus).
