PolyU SPEED Students Expand Horizons through International Summer School Programme

Twenty-two PolyU SPEED students took part in the International Summer School Programme held at Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK in July 2026.

Over the course of 12 days, the students engaged in interactive learning sessions led by experienced tutors from the Northumbria Language Centre. The programme covered a wide spectrum of topics, including British culture, academic and communication skills, critical thinking, English for university study, and research project development. Through discussions, presentations and group activities, the participants enhanced their English proficiency while honing essential academic and interpersonal skills.

Beyond the classroom, the students immersed themselves in a variety of cultural and social activities. Highlights included a visit to Alnwick Castle, famously featured in the Harry Potter film series, and opportunities to explore Newcastle’s distinctive Geordie culture, historical heritage and local lifestyle. Many students also travelled to nearby cities such as Durham and York, gaining first-hand insights into British culture and traditions. Accommodation in Northumbria University’s halls of residence offered the students a taste of UK campus life, fostering independence, adaptability and cross-cultural communication skills.

Before joining the programme, I worried that I might not be able to adapt to a new environment and lifestyle. However, the friendliness of Newcastle’s residents and the city’s relaxed pace of life quickly eased my concerns. This experience taught me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and showed me that the world is far broader, more diverse and more inclusive than I had imagined. It is a precious memory that will stay with me for life.

Both classroom learning and extracurricular visits made the cultural immersion in the UK one of the highlights of the programme. I gained deeper insights into Newcastle’s unique Geordie culture and local history, while the trip to Alnwick Castle brought history and culture vividly to life. Interacting with students from different countries also broadened my horizons.

The warmest memories of the journey were the evenings spent cooking and sharing dinner with classmates. In a foreign land, we supported each other, shared everyday moments and built genuine friendships. Beyond acquiring knowledge and improving my English, I came away with treasured and unforgettable experiences.
