In order to increase students’ understanding of international retail operations and encourage them to embrace cultural diversity, a study tour to Singapore was organised by the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU SPEED) in collaboration with The State University of New York at Buffalo and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) from 2 to 9 June 2016. The tour was joined by over 30 PolyU SPEED students and more than 40 students from the United States, Singapore, Japan, etc. During the tour, the participants paid visits to major local retailers in Singapore such as Eu Yan Sang International Limited and Kele Bakery.

PolyU SPEED students found the study tour memorable and eye-opening. During the tour, they learnt together and exchanged views with other teenagers from different nations and cultures. They were also provided with a rare opportunity to interact directly with the senior management of various international retailers during the company visits.

Kenneth Leung, a PolyU SPEED student of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Retail and Service Management, said that the tour enabled him to meet other tertiary students from over the world, and gain a deeper understanding of the business environment as well as local culture and history of Singapore through the classes at SIM. The experience is valuable for planning his future career in the retail sector.
