Service-Learning Subject “Storytelling for Understanding: Refugee Children in Hong Kong” Closing Ceremony
30 Nov 2024
On 30 November 2024, the Service-Learning subject titled “Storytelling for Understanding: Refugee Children in Hong Kong” concluded with a finale at the PolyU West Kowloon Campus by the Division of Languages and Communication (LC) of PolyU CPCE. Representatives from Christian Action’s Centre for Refugees and Oxfam, as well as children and their parents from refugee families, were invited to attend the event and witness the students’ learning outcomes.
The six-week training enabled PolyU SPEED students to have in-depth cultural exchanges with refugee families by using English. Also, they provided no less than 40 hours of face-to-face services to the children. In the storytelling workshop, the students created stories and experienced AI illustrations with the children and helped them record podcasts to develop their own stories so as to create fond memories.
Run for the third time since 2022, this unique Service-Learning subject was developed for PolyU SPEED students by Dr Shi Huiwen and Dr Eric Cheung, Senior Lecturers from LC. After the training, the students’ English proficiency, leadership skills, cultural communication and sense of responsibility were greatly enhanced.
