Students Embark on International Summer School Programme (UNN) 2023-24 in Newcastle, the UK
15 Aug 2024
After a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Summer School Programme (UNN) was successfully relaunched in July 2024. A total of 22 students from PolyU HKCC and PolyU SPEED travelled to Newcastle in the North East of England to participate in this exciting summer programme at Northumbria University (UNN), one of the best modern universities in the UK with a long tradition of welcoming students from across the globe.
Over two weeks, the students attended learning sessions conducted by experienced tutors from the Northumbria Language Centre, with topics covering British culture, English language tuition, intercultural communication, academic research skills and presentation skills. With first-rate accommodation in one of the University’s halls of residence, the students embraced the chance to immerse themselves in campus life in Europe.
Beyond the campus, the students experienced the vibrant life in Newcastle and the surrounding areas, visiting major cultural and historical attractions and engaging in social exchanges with local students and residents. These activities provided students with an insight into British society and culture.
Reflecting on this eye-opening trip to the UK, the students found the whole experience highly rewarding and memorable, with some describing it as transformational.
Students’ Sharing
Anna Yu, a PolyU SPEED student, shared, “What particularly impressed me was the enthusiasm of the British teachers - their care and dedication. They even performed magic tricks during breaks, making everyone feel happy. I felt the hospitality of people in a foreign country and made many precious friends. All the academic and cultural activities broadened our horizons and cultivated our communication and collaboration skills. It was an unforgettable and meaningful experience.”
Kent Hui, a PolyU HKCC student, shared, “We participated in a wide range of cultural activities and excursions: visits to iconic landmarks like the Angel of the North, Newcastle Castle, and the famous Quayside district along the River Tyne. We also watched a football match live in a bar, explored the vibrant local music scene, and took a day trip to Alnwick Castle (made famous by the Harry Potter film series). These experiences not only broadened our understanding of British culture, but also fostered a deep appreciation for the rich history and natural beauty of the region.”
