Professor Jatin Nathwani is the Ontario Research Chair in Public Policy and Sustainable Energy at the University of Waterloo, in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Environment. He is the Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE). He has a PhD in Engineering from the University of Toronto. As Executive Director, he leads the institute’s research and development efforts to foster the development of emerging technologies that includes the full range of emerging energy technologies including solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, integration of distributed energy systems with energy storage, ICT for smart grid and micro-grids for off grid supply. His current focus is on competitive energy policies to enable the innovations required for the transition of the global energy system to a lower carbon energy economy. Prof. Nathwani’s experience in the energy sector includes corporate strategy, business planning, policy developments influencing the electricity sector, and the planning, design and operation of critical infrastructure. His knowledge of industry practices encompasses regulatory affairs, drivers of innovation in business practice, and environmental health and safety issues.

 

Prof. Nathwani serves on several boards at the provincial and national levels. He is the lead Scientific Advisor to the Waterloo Global Science Initiative, established by the Perimeter Institute and the University of Waterloo, and is the lead author of the Equinox Summit-Energy 2030 Blueprint. He is chair of the board of the Canadian University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering; member of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum; board member of the Ontario Centre of Excellence; member of the Clean Tech Advisory Board, Council for Clean and Reliable Electricity; member of the Advisory Panel for the Science Media Centre of Canada; and Advisory Board Member of Sustainable Waterloo. He has published widely with international refereed journals, including Energy Policy, Journal of Sustainable Finance and Investment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, and The Electricity Journal, etc. He was a Visiting Research Fellow working on sustainable energy with the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge in 2015.

Abstract

 

As the founding Executive Director, Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE), Professor Jatin Nathwani has brought together the expertise of 100+ faculty members to develop and implement large-scale multi-disciplinary research projects in collaboration with business, industry, governments and civil society groups. His current focus is on implementing a global change initiative: he is the Co-Director, with Professor Joachim Knebel (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany), of the consortium ‘Affordable Energy for Humanity (AE4H): A Global Change Initiative’ that comprises 130+ leading energy access researchers and practitioners from 30 institutions and 16 countries. In this workshop, Professor Nathwani will share with the participants such global research agendas on investing in sustainable and renewable energy as an imperative, responsible investing initiative for sustainability.
