Course Information

This course aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the role of basic clinical nutrition and nutrition management in wound healing. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively assess, develop, and implement nutrition interventions that promote optimal nutrition care for patients in clinical settings. The course cover various aspects of clinical nutrition, including macronutrients, micronutrients, nutrition assessment, and specific nutritional strategies for common clinical conditions.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of clinic nutrition;
  • Assess and evaluate the nutritional status of patients through appropriate nutrition assessment methods;
  • Able to identify the nutrition needs for patients with different clinical conditions;
  • Understand the importance of clinical nutrition in wound healing and its impact on patient outcomes;
  • Implement evidence-based nutritional interventions to enhance nutrition care for patients in both clinical and community setting;
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition interventions.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to Clinical Nutrition (3 hours)

  • Introduction to basic nutrition and metabolism
  • Macronutrients and micronutrients
  • Nutrition concerns in different life stages 

Module 2: Assessing Nutritional Status and Dietary Assessment Methods (3 hours)

  • Nutritional screening and assessment tools
  • Anthropometric measurements and their interpretation
  • Biochemical markers of nutritional status
  • Dietary assessment methods and their application in clinical practice

Module 3: Nutrition Management in Chronic Diseases (3 hours)

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obesity
  • Kidney disease
  • Clinical nutrition in surgery
  • Nutrition management for atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Malnutrition, oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition support

Module 4: Nutrition Strategies for Wound Healing (3 hours)

  • Wound healing, cellar mechanisms and pathological outcomes
  • Energy and protein requirements for wound healing
  • Role of vitamins and minerals in wound healing
  • Dietary sources and supplementation strategies for micronutrients
  • Optimizing wound healing through specific dietary modifications
  • Oral nutrition supplements application in wound care
  • Addressing special considerations (e.g., diabetes, malnutrition in wound healing
  • Menu planning exercise

Entry Requirements

  • Registered or enrolled nurses in Hong Kong; or 

  • Hold a recognised Higher Diploma/Associate Degree or above with Healthcare background, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, registered medical social workers etc.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course with at least 70% attendance rate, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance from PolyU SPEED and a CNE Certificate issued by AHKNS.
